Södergren Mk III

The Södergren Mk III is a Mk II updated with a different keel design.

It is a narrow design with the width down on minimum 720 mm.

Displacement is in the light end with 255 kg when floating on the marks.

Measured length is a grain smaller than the Norlin Mk II from the same time

giving a little more sail area. Compared to the Norlin Mk III it’s a tad longer

with less sail but still very close to what seems to be optimum.

It is characterized by its narrowness and sharp entry and the LCB abaft most

other designs in the class. In its original trim it was always a performer in light

winds and would still be competitive. The original measurement trim was not getting

the most out of the design as was discovered much later. Some more lead, a little

nose trim and reduced sail area by raising the boom gave her a boost in the upper

wind scale and she proved to be competitive long after everybody had abandoned her.

The Södergren Mk III was built by Vene-Björndahl in Finland who later replaced her

with the Norlin Mk III.

I don’t know how many that was built but not less than 200 I would guess.

For Scandinavian sailors who wants to get into the class at a low budget this boat is still a

good choice. If you fix the internal structure and remeasure with less sail more lead

you for sure have a boat that is competetive on club level. The obvious drawback

with the design is the size, it is not for the really big guys.
