Howlett 2,4mR

Ian Howlett designed this boat in the beginning of the nineties. To my knowledge it never performed and I dont know how many that where built. The boat in the pictures presented here was built in 1994 and is still in use. Analysing other designs that hasnīt performed to expectations has shown that in many cases the design is not the problem. Mostly the major reason for poor performance is that the mouldings are way to heavily built which in turn decreases the amount of lead ballast available.

Ron Morris, sailing  my former Stradivari in Rutland has been kind enough to give me access to the specifications of the boat in the pictures, including checking the weight of the ballast. Analysing these figures tells me that this is one of those designs that could have been a winner if it just had been built better and better optimised in the measurment.

It is in the light and wide corner of the "box". At a displacement of 269kg it is 7kg lighter than the Stradivari Mk I and 20kg below the Norlin Mk III but still not as light as the Ridder 2,4 at 256kg.

Comparing the stability curves of the Stradivari and the Norlin shows that the wider/lighter Stradivari has more RM all the way down to 28dgr so given the fact that the Howlett is even wider than the Stradivari at the waterline it should have enough stability and should be superseded by the Norlin in RM only at heeling angles around 30dgr, angles that you want to avoid anyway.

Any additional information about the design i.e. how many where built, if there has been any changes made like trying different keels and so forth is welcome. If anyone can find the moulds the boat deserves a new start. It could be instrumental in building a good UK fleet.
